Responsive disaster research | Natural Hazards Research Australia

Responsive disaster research

We fund research in direct response to natural hazards and other changes that affect vulnerability, exposure or resilience.

Our responsive disaster research comprises two programs: the Rapid Disaster Research Program and the Quick Response Program.

Rapid Disaster Research Program

The Rapid Disaster Research Program enables the Centre to engage actively with its end-user and industry partners to identify essential research that is needed in the wake of a disaster caused by natural hazards, such as Black Summer or the 2022 eastern Australia floods.

This program addresses significant unresolved questions after a disaster and collects information that will be used to provide insights into the event and its outcomes. This will help us learn important lessons from disasters and strengthen Australia’s disaster risk reduction and resilience.

This could be through projects established by the Centre or through co-investment with partners.

Quick Response Program

Funding is available for quick response research, providing support to researchers travelling to areas recently affected by natural hazards to ensure that the impacts are measured in a timely manner.

These funds builds on the important quick response research from the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC, which supported post-disaster research impacts, recovery, data collection and rehabilitation, planning and community response for natural hazards between 2016 and 2021.

Funding support is limited to $3,000 (excluding GST) per team for any individual natural hazard. Any researcher or postgraduate student working in natural hazards research is eligible to apply, with postgraduate applicants requiring the endorsement of the primary supervisor.

Funding is principally designed to reimburse travel-related expenses such as airfares, car rental, accommodation and food. Minor data collection expenditure may be considered. Upon completion, a report detailing the activities undertaken must be provided to the Centre.
