Exciting new funding opportunities are now available through Natural Hazards Research Australia for postgraduate students and early career researchers to support their activities and create a strong, collaborative research network.

The Centre is committed to supporting and promoting a strong intellectual cohort of researchers who can deliver usable outputs to partners and the wider community. To facilitate this, the new education program – comprising Postgraduate Research Scholarships and Early Career Researcher Fellowships for now – has been designed to support the future generations of natural hazard and emergency management researchers.

The Postgraduate Research Scholarship program continues a successful program that supported more than 200 students in the Bushfire CRC and the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC, while the Early Career Researcher Fellowship program is a new initiative targeted at early career researchers. Associate student funding will open shortly.

The Centre particularly encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Indigenous communities, women, culturally and linguistically diverse people, people with disability, LGBTIQ+ people, and people with family and caring responsibilities.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships

This Postgraduate Research Scholarship program supports eligible students undertaking full-time study in a research area that aligns with the Centre’s research themes. Preference will be given to students enrolling in full-time PhD students, but applications from part-time or Masters by Research students will be considered.

The following scholarships are available:

  • Full scholarships: up to $30,000 per year for up to three and half years for PhD students and two years for Masters students.
  • Top-up scholarships: up to $15,000 per year for three and a half years to holders of university research scholarships or partial industry-funded scholarships.

Scholarship recipients will also be able to apply for additional funding support to participate in Centre events and professional development activities, apply for short-term placements and apply for a fellowship in the final stages of their study (see below).

Applications for 2021 scholarships are now open. From 2022, scholarships will open on 1 July each year and remain open until all scholarships have been allocated for that period.

Early Career Researcher Fellowships

The Early Career Researcher Development and Industry Fellowship program supports the career development of late-stage PhD students, early career researchers and researchers employed in industry. Recipients will have the opportunity to build their research credentials and pursue new research-based collaborations.

There are two fellowships available:

  • Early Career Researcher Development Fellowships: up to $15,000 available to full-time PhD students who have completed two years of study, and PhD-qualified researchers employed in research positions up to five years post-graduation
  • Early Career Researcher Industry Fellowships: up to $7,500 available to PhD-qualified researchers employed in industry for up to five years post-graduation

Fellowship applications are now open for 2021 and will close on 24 December 2021. Applications for fellowships from 2022 will open on 1 September and close on 30 October each year.
