The first of this year’s two research investment rounds has opened for Natural Hazards Research Australia’s (the Centre) Participants to submit research concepts for potential development into projects.

The round opened on 20 January 2025 and closes at 5pm AEDT 28 February 2025.

As a part of the Centre’s 2024-2026 Research Plan, project concepts are formally considered for funding twice a year.

The updated concept submission form, key dates and further information are available on the Submitting a project idea page.

If approved for funding by the Centre’s Board, the Participant(s) and the Centre will co-develop these short project concepts into a detailed project brief, which will be open to Expressions of Interest from project teams to carry out the project.

The following areas are identified as high priority research areas for this concept round:

  • Understanding and mitigating risk of flood, earthquake, heatwave, coastal inundation, tsunami, cyclone and severe storm (inclusive of associated hazards)
  • Social equity, including vulnerabilities that impede people and communities to prepare for, respond to and recover from natural hazards
  • Environmental solutions including an understanding of how we can improve environmental resilience and the efficacy of environmental solutions to reduce natural hazard risk
  • Land use planning and urban design, including building materials, as critical future natural hazard risk reduction activities and
  • Future workforce

Project concepts aligning with these high priority research areas are strongly encouraged.
