17 August 2022

The opportunity to promote current and upcoming projects at Natural Hazards Research Australia was provided by key partner events over the last month.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Conference was held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, in late July with the Centre as a supporting partner. Over two days emergency management professionals, researchers and community members connected with each other across a wide range of practical topics.

Presenters with Centre connections included Dr Mika Peace on the use of data at the Bureau of Meteorology, Board member Iain MacKenzie asking the tough questions and suggesting some answers on our responses to disasters, and Ricky Archer from NAILSMA on building trusted partnerships across Australia to work on natural hazards research including between Indigenous organisations and Rangers and local agencies A booth in the exhibition hall provided a central point for networking and meeting with conference participants.

The Centre supported a Fenner Conference on the Environment event, “Compound events in Australia – strategic planning for multivariate risk”, as part of a series by the Australian Academy of Science, at the Shine Dome in Canberra. Hosted by the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS) an independent society for the weather, climate and oceans sciences, the event brought together scientists and industry with government and emergency services representatives. CEO Andrew Gissing and Research Strategy Director Dr John Bates both participated in the event.

The promotion of Centre activities continues with the AFAC22 conference in Adelaide next week. The Centre is the Industry Supporter for the Research Day, which will begin with an address by CEO Andrew Gissing. Plus, the Centre has a prominent booth in the exhibition hall: https://www.afacconference.com.au/

Natural Hazards Research Australia is working closely with the Australian Government organising committees on a range of aspects of the conference, including the program and an Australian Pavilion in the exhibition hall.
