Dr Elise Remling is an environmental social scientist at the University of Canberra’s Centre for Environmental Governance, whose research examines how climate change intersects with social vulnerability, disaster risk, and community resilience. Her career spans 13 years of climate and disaster research across multiple institutions in Australia and Europe. Elise's work employs participatory methodologies that prioritise local voices in adaptation planning across Australia, Kenya, Colombia, and Fiji. She specialises in community-based disaster preparedness and the social dimensions of climate change, with particular expertise in governance challenges and decision-making processes. She has secured over AUD $3.2M in competitive research funding and published extensively in top-tier journals including Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Climate ChangeEnvironmental Politics and Climate Policy. Elise's research practice combines academic excellence with sustained community involvement, including leadership in grassroots disaster preparedness and recovery efforts in her local community in rural NSW. Her policy-oriented research has influenced government agencies internationally, including advice to the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the European External Action Service and the UN Climate Security Mechanism.
